That chubby swede
It's been a while since I last wrote anything here. I've been busy, things at work acting up, a clueless boss and major fuck-ups on a daily basis.

I got myself a "new" laptop, an IBM Thinkpad R31 which had Wintendo XP on it, formatted it and installed Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn, works really good and looks nice too. The old, Compaq N115, also got reformatted after I had transfered all data, scripts, pictures and documents, "restored" Wintendo XP Home on it. It will probably serve as a surf/chat-box for the kids, if they can stand the freeze-ups and wonky wireless card.

Been working on my scripts (spam hunting), rewriting them in Perl, which is much more efficient, less code and no quirky ActiveX objects to rely on. All the data, some 270Mb was ported in less than an hour. I hope I'll have the time to write some chart/diagram thingies later, to visualize the flow/pressure. The last couple of days the average is at 12000/day, I wish I had my other boxes up and running, unfortunately they are still in "storage", at my parents place.

We're moving into a yellow wooden house, I bought a condominium in February and we are set to move in at June 27. It's a nice neighborhood with lots of small houses, lots of families with kids and less to none traffic. We're gonna start packing this weekend, after all birthdays, gonna take care of all the bank/loan stuff next week or the week after that.

We got yet another cat the other week, a fluffy female. The two cats aren't getting along just yet, but it's getting better every day, they still fight a little, nothing serious, mostly running around lite ferrets on speed.

I will most probably post pictures of the house, the cats and maybe some interior+exterior of the house later.

I found this article while browsing a bit after hours at the office. Really interesting and well written. I think most people will be driven towards open and free operating systems with less or no DRM-software and they will probably not buy DRM-hardware as it will be expensive.

I've tweaked the scripts some more, started to collect "From:" domains, resolving their MX-records and comparing them to the IPs I collect from spam, some interersting points noticed. Also tried to plot large "maps" from the data with GraphViz but my smallish laptop doesn't fit the workload, for a fourteen day period, there is somewhere between 9000 and 14000 data points. GV allocates some 700MB RAM and then just sits there. Well, here's the latest list...

Spam pours into my inbox. I've improved my scripts, parsing and database queries have been tweaked, statistics functions have been written, I just have to get the time to work on it a little more. My laptop dies/freezes of stress when I run my scripts, I need to get a new laptop. My other computers are stored at my parents place, I've moved everything from my aparment as I'm selling it, so there will be some time before I can tinker with this on a real computer. Looking for a house to move into, going to look at a house tomorrow. Enough ranting, here's the latest stats.

I noticed that a few people on livejournal started popping up on my contact list in Miranda, a few of these are hermez, brokengoose and sir_montag.

There are lots of clients for Jabber. There is even a few add-ons for Firefox. Should be fairly easy to set up and there is a few guides and directions here at livejournal.

I got really upset this morning, the corporate wide anti-virus client bitched about a trojan. Well, guess what... it reports that the completely legitimate and explicitly installed Distributed.net Client is a trojan. Sure, there is droppers (malware that install other malware) for this floating around on the internet but these installations at the office are legitimate and done on purpose, to participate in the contest.

The OfficeScan Client didn't even manage to remove or quarantine the said trojan... which tell us that the OSC sucks/blows and is terribly broken.

From: (my email address)
To: (address of TrendMicro support)
CC: (abuse address of distributed.net)
Subj: False Positive, DNETC.EXE

I would like to report that your product detects false positives, the DNETC.EXE is a Distributed.net RC5-72 Client and NOT a trojan. This is detected as "TROJ_DISTNET.A".

It is explicitly installed on workstations to participate in the RC5-72 competition, see http://www.distributed.net/rc5/ . I have been a participant (http://stats.distributed.net/participant/psummary.php?project_id=8&id=335498) of the RC5-72 competition since 2002-Dec-07 (1383 days).

THIS IS NOT A TROJAN!

The product that reports this is TrendMicro OfficeScan (Eng/Ptn 8.310/3.765.00 DCE/DCT 3.6/363), fix your product -- it's broken.

Regards, Christopher.

I'll update this when I get a reply.

Update:
I uninstalled all clients, even from some development servers which are "protected" with TrendMicro ServerProtect, a sister client to the OSC that runs on workstations, the ServerProtect Client (SPC for short) didn't report anything, not even while uninstalling the said "trojan".

I have refined my scripts further, country resolving along with net range resolving. No big changes in stats though.

I'm now on Jabber, well, actually been for a while.
I run Miranda IM with a Jabber plug-in, more information here. I'm online almost all weekdays between 8:00am to 5:00pm (GMT +1).
